After already making a name for herself in previous acting roles, Sarah Michelle Gellar really blew up with the rise of a hit American television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The show was a success for over six years and continues to be re-aired on various networks.
Beginning on March 10, 1997, writer-director Joss Whedon landed on a goldmine with his creation of the vampires and demons series. The show follows Buffy Summers, who is played by Sarah Michelle Gellar, as she is in a line of young women known as “Vampire Slayers” or “Slayers.”
Throughout the show, it is the Slayers’ duty to battle vampires, demons and other dark forces. Much like previous Vampire Slayers, Buffy is guided by a Watcher that trains and teachers her along the way. But unlike her predecessors, Buffy has a loyal group of friends to rely on that become known as the “Scooby Gang.”
The series hit the scene just prior to the vampire craze with the Twilight and Blade sagas. However, some credit this show for sparking the vampire phase that would soon take over the world.
It gained a reputable image over the years and consistently received positive reviews. In fact, it was even included in many “best of” lists such as being ranked #41 on the list of TV Guide’s 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time. In addition, it was #2 on Empire’s 50 Greatest TV Shows of All Time, #3 in TV Guide’s Top 25 Cult TV Shows of All Time and listed in Time magazine’s “100 Best TV Shows of All-TIME.”
The WB network ceased operation on September 17, 2006 after airing a homage aired to what became known as its most memorable series. This included the pilot episodes of Buffy and its spin-off Angel. And feeding off of the successful series, there have been countless tie-in products ranging from novels to comics to video games.
